Over the last few weeks, since Mark Zuckerberg and Pricilla Chan’s secret wedding, all the talk has been about Pricilla’s ring. Being a wedding blogger, it’s easy to get caught up in all that is glamourous and expensive when it comes to weddings, we tend to lean towards a vision that is unobtainable by the majority of couples planning their wedding. Being a wife and a newly wed, I know that bigger is not better. For those couple who can afford the big lavish affair, they shouldn’t feel they need to spend that kind of money. They should do what is important to them, as a couple.
An engagement ring is really special, and a wedding ring/band is that much more important, it signifies a life together and a bond that the couple share together. The ring could have costed $50 or it could be $500,000, but ultimately what it stands for is much more important than what it costs.
I honestly feel like the way the media and my peers have criticized Mark Zuckerberg for his “down to earth” affair and the $25,000 wedding ring (because $25K to Zuckerberg is like $1 for us “regular fold”) is exactly what is wrong with society. The New York Post went so far to call Zuckerberg cheap and others said it was the ugliest ring they ever saw. Really? Unless you know the couple, which it’s safe to say most don’t, and you know their style (maybe Pricilla’s favourite colour is Red and it means something to her) then you shouldn’t be so quick to judge.
Personally I’m in love with my ring and I’m certain Mrs. Chan-Zuckerberg feels the same way. My ring is special because my husband picked it out and together we picked out our bands. I’ll never forget when he put the engagement ring on my finger for the first time or when he asked me to be his wife, and i’ll never forget when we said “I do” at the alter infront of our family and friends. It’s a promise to each other, not a competition to see who has the biggest ring in my circle of friends, it’s about our marriage, our love and our life.
What do you think about Priscilla Chan-Zuckerberg’s ring and this whole controversy on how much money he spent? Would love to hear your thoughts.
